Sprinkler Controller Not Working? A Homeowner's Troubleshooting Guide
The controller is the brain of your system — and when it acts up, the whole yard goes dark. Here's how to work through it before you call.

Your sprinkler controller (or "timer") is the brain of the whole system — it tells each zone when to run and for how long. So when it stops working, nothing else does. The good news: most controller problems fall into a handful of buckets, and you can rule several out yourself in a few minutes.
First: is it a power problem?
A blank or dead display almost always means the controller isn't getting power. Check, in order:
- The outlet. Most controllers plug into a standard outlet — often a GFCI in the garage. If that GFCI has tripped, the controller goes dark. Press reset.
- The transformer. Many controllers use a small plug-in transformer that can fail. If the outlet has power but the controller is still dead, the transformer may be the culprit.
- The backup battery. Some models use a battery to hold the program during outages. A dead battery won't stop it from running on AC power, but it'll wipe your schedule after a power blip.

It has power but won't run a program
If the display is on but nothing happens at the scheduled time, the program is usually the issue:
- Is it in "Run" or "Auto" mode? It's easy to leave a controller in "Off" after testing.
- Did the schedule get wiped? A power surge or a dead backup battery can clear your start times and run lengths. Re-enter them.
- Is the rain/freeze sensor tripped? If your system has a sensor and it's wet or faulty, it can correctly (or incorrectly) tell the controller to skip watering.
It runs, but no water comes out
This one confuses people, but it's an important clue: if the controller shows a zone running and you can hear a faint click from the valve, the controller is doing its job — the problem is downstream (the valve, the wiring to it, or the water supply), not the controller itself. If a single zone is dead, work through our guide on a zone that won't turn on. If nothing runs on any zone, check that the main water supply is on and the controller's common wire is connected.
Fault codes and shorted zones
Many modern controllers detect an electrical short on a zone and flag it — "Err," "Fault," or a specific station number. That's actually helpful: it points straight at a bad solenoid or a damaged wire on that zone, not the controller. Our controller service covers reading those codes and tracing the fault.
Smart Wi-Fi controllers won't connect
If you've got a Rachio or similar and it dropped off Wi-Fi: most home routers broadcast both a 2.4GHz and a 5GHz network, and many irrigation controllers only work on 2.4GHz. Make sure you're connecting it to the 2.4GHz band. A router reboot and re-adding the device in the app fixes the majority of these.
Repair or replace?
A controller that's lost its program but still works just needs reprogramming — free once you know how. A controller with a fried board, a dead display that isn't a power issue, or one that keeps losing its settings is usually worth replacing.
